The Dolls' House Wedding Book

Some of the best how-to books for making dollhouse miniatures these days are coming out of the British United Kingdom. "The Dolls' House Wedding Book" by Sue Johnson is a case in point.

This is the kind of book that takes me back to my first Barbie doll, and the thrill of being the first little girl in the neighborhood to acquire the coveted wedding gown (the most expensive item in the Barbie wardrobe at the time), lavish with lace and accented with a gauzy veil held with a seed-beaded circlet.

This book gives me the same feeling, although it is definitely for adult enthusiasts, and beyond Barbie. It includes detailed instructions for making fabulous gowns for figures in 1-inch scale, along with further instructions for related accessories from lingerie to veils, headpieces and jewelry.

Directions are also included for other aspects of wedding scenes, including the cake, the roombox, and floral arrangements, although there are no directions for making the actual flowers. Also missing are directions for adding a groom or any other male figures to the setting.

It should also be noted that the gowns are designed for slightly taller female figures of 6 inches. The author notes that using a 6- inch, rather than a 5 1/2-inch figure makes the skirt of the gown drape better, but the patterns may be cut down to fit a smaller doll.

All in all, this is a charming book, extensively illustrated with full-color photos, easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions, and full-size patterns and templates in the back. The patterns are also adaptable for other fancy dress scenes. Ascot, perhaps, or the Academy Awards?
